Girls varsity basketball win Holiday Shootout for first time in six years

The Urban girls basketball team beat the Drew Dragons, the Mt Shasta Bears and the St. Vincent de Paul Mustangs to win the Urban-hosted Holiday Shootout for the first time since 2006.

Urban has hosted the tournament for 12 years and has won only three times before. The Blues started off strong with a 68-34 win against Drew on Thursday Dec. 13 at Kezar Pavilion and continued to roll with a 45-32 win against Mt. Shasta on the following day.

Their game against St. Vincent on Dec. 15 was tighter, with St. Vincent coming out to an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Blues fought their way back to a 24-15 lead at halftime, which shrunk to 31-23 going into the fourth quarter. Urban freshman guard CJ Catina protected the Blues’ lead in the fourth with back-to-back three-pointers.

Of their opponents, captain Charlotte Blanc (’13) said, “(The win) felt good. They definitely came in thinking they could beat us even though we were better, and it was nice to see their faces after we beat them.”
