Urban’s varsity boys volleyball team finished this season with a 25-2 record. The team won the North Coast Section Division II Championship on May 14 and made an appearance in the California State Playoffs on May 19, establishing itself as a force in Northern California high school boys volleyball.
The 10-person team is composed of one ninth grader, one 10th grader, three 11th graders and five 12th graders. Its captains are Jean-Paul Calegari ’26, Zach Goodman ’26 and Lawson Smith ’26. “It’s almost the same group [as last year], which I think is really contributing to our success,” Smith said. “We’re very comfortable with each other.”
The May 14 NCS championship ended in a 3-2 victory for the team. “[Winning NCS] meant a lot,” Shai Colvin ’27 said. “I’ve been on varsity all three years, but never had major success. … Being able to win NCS, especially in a higher division, was a true testament to our hard work and perseverance this season.”
The team also won every set of every match en route to a Bay Counties League championship, securing the team’s second league championship in four years. “We’ve been insanely dominant this season,” Calegari said. “This is easily the best team that we’ve had since I’ve been at Urban.”
Smith reflected on the importance of collaboration and perseverance for the team. “We have a very tight-knit team where we always have each other’s backs,” he said. “Having that sort of maturity, to be able to pick each other up [and] not get in our heads about every mistake, has really brought us close together as a group.”
