The varsity girls softball team finished the spring season in fourth place within the Bay Counties League West. Their record made them unrecognizable from the winless season a few years ago.
The team concluded the season with its best performance since the 2019 season. Captains Audrey Thornton ’26, Noli Rosen ’26, Jackie Villegas ’26 and Natalie Babler-Kuebler ’27 led the team’s 20 athletes.
After a 0-13 season in 2024, the team improved to 4-12-1 in 2026. “I have random people asking, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on with softball? I’m jealous,’” Thornton said.
A midseason league game against Making Waves Academy on April 28 stood out to many players as a highlight of the season. Aided by a Rosen home run, the team won the game 13-8. “It started out pretty rocky, and then we started getting hits and getting excited,” Rosen said. “We demolished them.”
Throughout the season, many injuries tested the team. “We had so many girls get injured, a lot at the very end of the season,” Thornton said. “For our final games, we were playing with lineups that we weren’t really used to.”
Five players are graduating, leaving behind 15 current players. Taylor O’Keefe ’28, a member of the team, talked about her relationship with the softball seniors. “When I think of softball, I think of them,” she said. “They’re kind of all I’ve known.”
O’Keefe shared her hopes for next year, with all of the turnover the roster will experience. “We’re like a kept secret at Urban,” she said. “I want the community to come see what we can do.”
